Celebrities sure make law enforcement confusing. Ever since Princess Diana was killed in a car crash partly caused by the overzealousness of oncoming paparazzi photographers, the public has been sympathetic to popular celebrities. But does that mean photographers should get shot, and by BB guns no less?
According to the Associated Press, law enforcement has been assigned to investigate the BB gun shooting of a photographer who was staking out Britney Spears.
Law Enforcement School for Celebrities?
BB gun shootings are usually pretty low on the priority list for the typically swamped Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, but authorities say they were flooded with phone calls.
"Because of the media attention, we'll probably put this on the front burner to settle the whole thing," said sheriff's Sgt. Robert Knudson.
Media in a Law Enforcement Career
Though the shooting "doesn't even rise to the level of assault with a deadly weapon," Knudson added, sheriff's dispatch operators received nearly two dozen phone calls from news organizations following the incident.
A detective will be assigned to the case Monday, authorities said.
Brad Diaz, the photographer, was shot in the leg while standing in the street a couple hundred feet from a home where Spears was believed to be attending a baby shower in her honor. It remains unclear whether Spears was even inside at the time.
BB Gun Brings Media And Law Enforcement
Diaz claimed the BB came from the direction of the home. Spears' body guards told authorities they were not involved in the shooting.
Not surprisingly, Los Angeles law enforcement will get leads from ample video footage. Britney Spears is such a gold mine, cameramen will idly record a house she is only rumoured to be in.
Break in the Spears BB Gun Case
Still according to the Associated Press, there exists video showing Diaz with a bloody thigh and guests entering the well-screened villa carrying gifts and packages.
Los Angles law enforcement is undoubtedly overcome with relief at this amazing break in the case.
