Career Opportunities in Animation

As demand for video games, feature-length animation films, and highly creative cartoons increases, the field of animation design continues to grow. In recent years, technological advancements in computer animation and the success of movies such as Toy Story, Shrek, and Finding Nemo have led to a greater interest in the world of animation films.

Animation students have traditionally gone on to work for the animation, advertising, or motion picture and television industries. Specific focuses in these areas include film and TV animation, 3D illustration, multimedia design, digital special effects, digital video production, video game animation, and cartooning.

Multimedia artists and animators generally begin projects with hand sketches and then use computers to create the series of pictures that form the animated or special effects seen in movies, television programs, and computer games. Some artists use storyboards for television commercials, movies, and animated features. These storyboards help to better present the proposed animation and sequencing, as well as serve as a guide to placing actors and cameras during the production of commercials.

More and more, today's animation graduates are using their skills in non-traditional ways. As the need for visual communication in the business world continues to grow, the use of 3D modeling is becoming more prevalent in fields such as aerospace engineering, professional sports, and finance.
